High voltage power lines. What distance is harmful?

Looks like a dream home. Just one problem.  It’s right near power lines. You can almost hear crackling electricity when you are in the back yard.  You have young children and are worried if it is safe.  And you’ve read articles that say this could be a problem.

Well, you are right to be concerned. There is an increasing body research and studies that show there could potentially be serious harm to one’s health, especially children. Without accurate measurements to be sure, stay more than 800 meters away from powerlines. Closer than that, please contact us, and we can come out and do an inspection for you. It may still be safe. Only one way to know for sure. Our measurements will tell you whether it is safe or not.

Call us at 905–719–7030 for an inspection or email us here.

Power Lines: what distance is safe

Updated May 4, 2017

As EMF consultants & inspectors, we get a lot of questions about the safety of buying a home near high voltage power lines. What distance is safe? How close do you have to be for it to be harmful to your health?

The simple answer is: “don’t buy a home near power lines.” The health risks are far too great, particularly for children. You should start to be concerned if the power lines are closer than 500 metres. I have been called upon countless times to measure the electrical and magnetic readings near power lines. Results vary, but a good rule of thumb is that the zone for potential concern ranges from 150 to 500 metres. Less than that, forget it! But within that range, you might still have a viable home-purchase option. The only way to know for sure is to test the readings with a good EMF meter.

Pertinent Research

Professor Henshaw, a physicist with the University of Bristol, found that if a person spent 10 per cent of his time close to power lines, he would be subjected to up to twice the acceptable level of radioactivity. His study linked power lines to leukaemia. Henshaw says they also cause skin cancer, lung cancer, depression and 60 suicides a year.*

The best way to be sure about a healthy distance from power lines is to have us come out and measure the electrical and magnetic fields near the power lines you’re concerned about.

We measure harmful EMF radiation near power lines and do EMF home inspections in Toronto Ontario and surrounding area.
